This ongoing lecture series promises to enlighten and entertain. Monthly meetings are open to everyone, not just members of the Bertrand Russell Society.

This Month: Ted Lechman on Harry G. Frankfurt’s On Bullshit.

During the late 1920s and early 30s, Bertrand Russell, then a world-famous philosopher, did a series of three books for Horace Liveright, the New York publishing house which had invented the Modern Library and was well known for publishing controversial authors. Russell's books and the U.S. lecture tours he took at the same time were all great successes. Some of his ideas for reform of self, marriage, education and society are taken for granted today, others have been rejected, but the study of Russell's popular advocacy between the wars provides us with a unique portrait of what the American mind was seeing and thinking about during what came to be called the Jazz Age..

David White
Dr. White teaches philosophy at St. John Fisher College, is president of the New York State Philosophers Association, and is a founder of the Greater Rochester Russell Set.

More than a quarter century ago W&B first opened its doors. To celebrate that milestone anniversary we initiated a brand new monthly reading series featuring writers who are 25 and younger. Join us as we discover a new generation of writers for the next quarter century.

Veronica Culver left Greece, New York after High School for Florida and Connecticut, where she sang in a band. She recently returned to Rochester with a journal full of evocative, imagistic, and passionate lyrics and poems, and is slowly working her way into the writing scene here while finishing her college education.

Shana King is a spoken word poet on a mission to improve the community and the world through poetry, her vehicle for spreading love. King mixes spoken word with singing on some pieces. She has performed at several locations including: St. John Fisher College, Hochstein, Venu, RCTV Channel 15, Bulls Head Plaza, The Phyllis Wheatley Library, and ArtWalk Alive. A senior at St. John Fisher College, she worked as the 2008 public relations intern for Slam High. Born and raised in Rochester, she plans to stay in Rochester as an artist teacher in urban schools

Ja’Daiza Johnson took first place in the 2008 Writers & Books at-large teen slam for teens from high schools without teams. A student at Brockport High School, she is a dedicated poet with strong lyrics and professional deliveries which belie her youth.

“If you’re going to turn into a pig, my dear,”
Alice said seriously, “I’ll have nothing more to do with you!”
—Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Come as you aren’t! Here’s your once-a-year opportunity to don a new persona. Join us for A Halloween Open Mic 2 featuring readings from local writers—and the opportunity to read a few pages of your own (or your favorite author’s) poetry or prose. Come dressed as a character from literature (perhaps one who inspires your reading or writing!) The fun begins at 7 p.m. on Halloween in Writers & Books new performance space. R.S.V.P.s are appreciated (but not required) to GregoryGerard@rochester.rr.com by October 15 to reserve a slot at the podium. Costumes required, snacks provided, donations encouraged.
