Visiting Writers Series Katharyn Howd Machan and Donna Marbach

Katharyn Howd Machan was born in Woodbury, Connecticut, in 1952. Her poems have appeared in numerous magazines, anthologies, and textbooks, and in 30 collections, most recently Belly Words: Poems of Dance (Split Oak Press, 2009) and When She's Asked to Think of Colors (Palettes & Quills Press, 2009). A professor in the Department of Writing at Ithaca College, in 2002 she was named Tompkins County's first Poet Laureate.

 

 

Donna M. Marbach is both an artist and a poet. She has published non-fiction, fiction,, and poetry in a variety of anthologies and periodicals. She is currently the poetry editor of the national monthly writers' magazine Byline, and previously edited for FootHills, a small poetry press in Kanona, NY. She is the co-founder and past president of Just Poets Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the celebration of poetry and and poets. (justpoets.org). Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Blueline, Hazmat Review, Homestead Review, Quercus Review, The MacGuffin, and she has been the featured poet in The Centrifugal Eye.

The Bertrand Russell Society

The Bertrand Russell Society was formed shortly after Russell’s death in 1970. Russell was born in 1872 and worked in fields such as mathematical logic; philosophy; social, religious, and educational reform; anti-war protests and politics. An accomplished writer, Russell received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. This ongoing lecture series promises to enlighten and entertain. Monthly meetings are open to everyone, not just to members of the society.

25 And Under hosts Slam High

Writers and Books is thrilled to host a performance by Slam High, Rochester’s nationally-renowned spoken word group, on Tuesday, June 16th at 7 pm. The Slam High poetry program was created in 2006 to introduce young people to the art of spoken word poetry as a means for creative expression and social activism. Since its commencement season, Slam High has participated twice in the International Brave New Voices Youth Poetry Slam Competition, finishing fourth out of 45 teams last year. The group has also been featured in two documentaries, including HBO’s internationally broadcasted series Brave New Voices. The 2009-10 team is comprised of young poets from all over Rochester and includes Kara Alexander (Columbia College, SOTA Grad), Mike "Ethic" Gerbino (School of Visual Arts NYC, W. Iron Graduate), Allen "Big Al" Williams (Princeton, SOTA Graduate), “Patches” Burke (W. Irondequoit High School), Keighley Page (W. Irondequoit High School), Tursha Gray (SOTA), Sharese King (University of Rochester, SOTA Graduate) and Elliott Powless (Edison IIT). 

As a part of their busy 2009-10 season, Slam High will perform during Writers and Book’s 25 & Under reading series, a monthly event that showcases young writers. Please join us as we celebrate these young poets and their work.

Adventures With Ari: A Puppy, A Leash, And Our Year Outdoors By Kathryn Miles

Poignant, smart, and as much fun as a day at the dog park, Adventures with Ari is a beautifully  crafted tale of a developing nature lover.  It also reveals the ins and outs of dog ownership and how  that bond can permeate all of the relationships in our lives.  Filled with heartfelt and often hilarious  anecdotes, Adventures with Ari will remind you to stop and smell the joy in everything, from roses  to roadkill.           

Kathryn Miles is an award-winning author, an associate professor, and the Director of Writing at  Unity College, where she teaches in the Environmental Writing program. Her essays have been  published in a variety of magazines and anthologies, including Houghton Mifflin’s Best American  Essays.  She lives with her family—including Ari—in Unity, Maine.   

Open History Reading Group
