First Fridays / Wide Open Mic

Admission is free.

Along with other local galleries and performance spaces, W&B will be open on the first Friday evenings of each month hosting Wide Open Mic, and a series of other readings and performances in our Verb Café and Performance Space. Known for its eclectic mix, Wide Open Mic welcomes poets, performers, and writers of all kinds. It is Rochester’s longest running open mic, hosted by Norm Davis, poet and editor of HazMat Review.

The Bertrand Russell Society

The Bertrand Russell Society was formed shortly after Russell’s death in 1970. Russell was born in 1872 and worked in fields such as mathematical logic; philosophy; social, religious, and educational reform; anti-war protests and politics. An accomplished writer, Russell received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. This ongoing lecture series promises to enlighten and entertain. Monthly meetings are open to everyone, not just to members of the society.

Visiting Writer Series: Stories of Armenian Discovery

Nancy Agabian, Cathy Salibian and Anaïs Salibian.
Discussion and book signing will follow.

Nancy Agabian is the author of Princess Freak, a collection of autobiographical poems and performance texts, and Me as her again: True Stories of an Armenian Daughter, a Lambda Literary Award finalist and shortlisted for this year's Saroyan International Prize. A Fulbright scholar to Armenia for 2006-07, Agabian is working on a nonfiction novel about post-Soviet Armenia. She teaches writing at Queens College and the Gallatin School at NYU. nancyagabian.com 



Cathy Salibian is a Rochester writer working on her first book, Haig's Promise, a family memoir. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Ararat, Rochester Review, Metropolitan, City Newspaper, Rochester Business Journal and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. She holds writing awards from the New York Press Association, The Alliance of Area Business Publications and the Society for Technical Communication.  



anaisAnais Salibian, M.A., has a private practice in therapeutic bodywork and has been teaching writing since 1989. She has published essays, memoirs, and opinion pieces  in Ararat Quarterly, The Sun, Creative Woman, and local newspapers, and appears in the anthology Through the Kitchen Window. She is currently working on a novel. In 2004 she received the Writers & Books Teacher of Adults Award for the Creation and Appreciation of Literature.

W&B Fall Open House & Book Sale

Saturday, September 25, 9 a.m to 5 p.m.
Free and open to the public

We will be opening our doors wide to the community to find out more about all our programs and sample some of our course offerings. A number of our teachers will be on hand to answer questions and conduct “mini workshops.” All free. This will also be a great time to stock up on some of those books you never had the opportunity to read previously as we conduct our largest used book sale of the year.

Big Pencil Awards Night

Saturday, September 25, 6 – 9 p.m
Tickets: $20 W&B Members/ $25 General Public

Join us as we honor those individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the Rochester literary community. The evening will begin with hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, proceed with the presentation of awards, and conclude with fine teas, coffees and desserts. The winning ticket in the iPad raffle will also be drawn during this special event.
