First Fridays / Wide Open MicSept. 3, 7:00 pm Along with other local galleries and performance spaces, W&B will be open on the first Friday evenings of each month hosting Wide Open Mic, and a series of other readings and performances in our Verb Café and Performance Space. Known for its eclectic mix, Wide Open Mic welcomes poets, performers, and writers of all kinds. It is Rochester’s longest running open mic, hosted by Norm Davis, poet and editor of HazMat Review. The Bertrand Russell SocietyThurs, Sept. 9 The Bertrand Russell Society was formed shortly after Russell’s death in 1970. Russell was born in 1872 and worked in fields such as mathematical logic; philosophy; social, religious, and educational reform; anti-war protests and politics. An accomplished writer, Russell received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. This ongoing lecture series promises to enlighten and entertain. Monthly meetings are open to everyone, not just to members of the society. Visiting Writer Series: Stories of Armenian DiscoveryThurs. Sept. 9: Nancy Agabian, Cathy Salibian and Anaïs Salibian.

History Reading GroupSept. 16: Pericles Join Writers & Books’ history buffs as they explore the big issues and personalities of history. We do not choose specific books, only subjects. You can read any book or other material on the subject and join the discussion. Meets on the third Thursday of each month. Visiting Writer Series: Novelist Justin KramonThurs. Sept. 16 The Visiting Writer Series brings together Writers from out of town as well as from the Greater Rochester Area. W&B Fall Open House & Book SaleSaturday, September 25, 9 a.m to 5 p.m. We will be opening our doors wide to the community to find out more about all our programs and sample some of our course offerings. A number of our teachers will be on hand to answer questions and conduct “mini workshops.” All free. This will also be a great time to stock up on some of those books you never had the opportunity to read previously as we conduct our largest used book sale of the year. Big Pencil Awards NightSaturday, September 25, 6 – 9 p.m Join us as we honor those individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the Rochester literary community. The evening will begin with hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, proceed with the presentation of awards, and conclude with fine teas, coffees and desserts. The winning ticket in the iPad raffle will also be drawn during this special event.
