<— To February 2011 •To April 2011—> First Fridays/Wide Open MicHosted by Norm Davis Genesee Reading Series: Kathleen Van Schaick and Claudia StanekMarch 8, 7:30 p.m. Now in its 26th year, the Genesee Reading Series presents writers from the greater Genesee Valley region reading in the W&B Performance Space Senior Reading GroupMarch 8, 2-4 p.m. Share your writing with other seniors in a comfortable atmosphere at W&B. The Bertrand Russell SocietyMarch 11. 7 p.m. The Bertrand Russell Society was formed shortly after Russell’s death in 1970. Russell was born in 1872 and worked in fields such as mathematical logic; philosophy; social, religious, and educational reform; anti-war protests and politics. An accomplished writer, Russell received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. This ongoing lecture series promises to enlighten and entertain. Monthly meetings are open to everyone, not just to members of the society. Monthly Story SlamMarch. 16, 7 pm An open mic of true loose and spontaneous stories based on one’s own life! Themes include: “Brush with the Law,” “Love Life,” “Embarassing Moment,” “True Tales from College”...but stories can be independent of the theme. This is an event where participants tell stories about their lives. The stories are loose and spontaneous, and the emphasis is on authenticity. See examples on Youtube by searching MothUp Story Slam. According to The New York Times: “Like the folk revival in the 70s or standup comedy in the 80s, all of a sudden everyone is doing it....Storytelling has exploded into a thriving genre all its own, a new avenue to prominence for writers and, increasingly, for actors and comedians.” Each performer gets approximately 5 minutes. History Reading GroupMar. 17, 7 p.m Join Writers & Books’s history buffs as they explore the big issues and personalities of history. We do not choose particular books, but only subjects. You can read any book or other material on the subject and join the discussion. Meets on the third Thursday of each month (except December) at 7 p.m. Book Discussions at Valley ManorThursday, March 17th, 10:30 a.m. - Noon The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti. "If All of Rochester Read the Same Book" selection for 2011. Garth Fagan and Quincy Troupe to Discuss Dance and Literature with Joe FlahertyGarth Fagan Dance will collaborate with Writers & Books to present a dialogue between Garth Fagan and Quincy Troupe, exploring the relationship between literature and dance, with performances by the Garth Fagan Dance Company. Quincy Troupe, perhaps best known as the author of The Pursuit of Happyness and co-author of The Autobiography of Miles Davis , will join Mr. Fagan in sharing excerpts of their poetry and discussing the inspiration behind their work. They will also analyze the challenge of how literature is transformed into movement and emotion for the dancers, then choreography, and, finally, a live performance. We hope you can join us for this discussion on March 25, 2011 at 8pm. Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for seniors, and $15 for students, and can be purchased online or by phone at (585) 454-3260.
