Rochester Teen Slam Poetry Team News

SLAM TEAM takes Second in NYC!

Take a Slam class at Writers & Books this winter!

It is with great pride that we announce that the Rochester Teen Slam team, made up of students from SOTA, Wilson, Edison, East and Monroe, placed as 2nd in both the New Jersey and NYC Regional slams this weekend!

The team traveled to NYC as a crew of 28 students and adults for a weekend of Poetry, Culture and Fun in the big city. We rocked the house and shared poetry & community with young poets from NYC, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The group met some of their Def Poet favorites like Lemon, Gemini and Big Mike, all of who performed at the Slams!

We would like to thank all of the schools, teachers, chaperones, donors and supporters who helped make this trip possible!

Our next gig is the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam in San Jose, California, July 17-22 where we will compete with over 450 of the top teen poets across the country and world!

Please join me in congratulating the following Slam Poet Champions and spreading the word of their success!

• Agape Towns (East)
• Cherice Murray (Wilson)
• Charequa Cook (Wilson)
• Darwan Mitchell (Wilson)
• Elliott Powless (Edison)
• Kelly McGuiness (Monroe)
• TaKara Alexander (SOTA)

Help us get to California!

The Rochester Teen Poetry Slam Team has been invited to The 10th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in San Jose, CA - July 17-22, 2007 (www.youthspeaks.org)

In addition, Coach Reenah Golden and teen advisor Sharese King will also present a workshop at the San José Brave New Voices festival.

We need your help to get there!

Although some of our expenses are covered by a scholarship provided by Brave New Voices, we still need to raise significant funds for travel. Please be generous or book the Team for a fun-raiser!
