Witness an 1841 encounter between escaped slave and abolitionist William Wells Brown and a printer sympathetic to his cause. Acting in first person, the pair discusses whether the printer will take on the publishing of Brown’s memoirs. Performance by two actors followed by discussion.

Lecture: “Notes Toward a History of African Americans in Science Fiction”

This lecture addresses the difference race has made in the history of science fiction (SF) both as subject matter and as a shaping force on the genre’s production; moreover, it contends that “African American Science Fiction” is not an oxymoron. Topics include definitions of SF, black absences and interventions in the genre, and the works of writers such as Octavia Butler, Samuel R. Delany, Nalo Hopkinson and others.

Robert J. Sawyer will read from his newly published novel Humans, the second book in his Neanderthal Parallax trilogy. He will also talk about writing, answer questions, and sign books.

Robert J. Sawyer is the author of fifteen science fiction novels, including the Hugo-Award finalists Starplex, Factoring Humanity, and Calculating God, and his Nebula-Award winning science fiction thriller The Terminal Experiment.

He is on the creative writing faculties of the University of Toronto and the Banff Centre for the Arts, and he is a much-in-demand speaker all over the world, having lectured in and accepted awards from the United States, Canada, Spain, and Japan, just to name a few.
