DETAILS ABOUT CALENDAR EVENTS

1. TheBuffalo Soldier Presentation Team offers a graphic picture of the lives and times of African American soldiers who, despite segregation, mistreatment and abuse, served, worked and fought to help settle America and fought in every war from 1866 until 1948 to protect American soil. The one-hour event, which incorporates history, displays and demonstrations, will be presented by five “Buffalo Soldiers” in authentic uniforms. This group, from the Pennington-Moye Post #251 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is led by Dave Greene.

2.Creative Approaches to Teaching The Buffalo Soldier. Join W&B’s Director of Youth Education and Outreach, Wendy Low, and “If All of Rochester Read the Same Book…” Coordinator, Karen vanMeenen, for a presentation and discussion of various approaches to teaching The Buffalo Soldier. Discussion will revolve around analyzing the writer’s craft; character development, choices and change; social, family and cultural issues raised within the text; the use of creative writing and personal writing assignments in the classroom; and other pertinent information. This class is geared toward anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the book, especially teachers looking for insight and creative approaches to the learning process.
