DETAILS ABOUT CALENDAR EVENTS

1. Creative Approaches to The Good Thief: A Training for Teachers and Book Discussion Leaders. Join Wendy Low, former Youth Education and Outreach Coordinator at Writers & Books; Big Read Coordinator and Rochester Institute of Technology Adjunct Instructor Karen vanMeenen for a presentation and discussion of various approaches to teaching and discussing The Good Thief. The discussion will revolve around analyzing the writer’s craft; character development, choices and change; social and cultural issues raised within the text; the use of creative writing and personal writing assignments in the classroom; and other pertinent information. This workshop is geared toward anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the book, especially book discussion leaders and teachers looking for insight and creative approaches to the learning process. Sat. Jan. 22, 10:00am-11:30am at W&B. Free but registration required: email karen@wab.org by Tues. Jan. 18 at 5pm.

2. Presentation: “Andreas Vesalius and Modern Human Anatomy, the Reawakening of the Human Mind, and the Renaissance in Medicine” by Rufino Pabico, MD.. The greatest grave robber of them all was Andreas Vesalius, whose work on human anatomy was responsible for the renaissance in medicine. The publication of in 1543 of his work De Humani Corporis Fabrica, considered a great masterpiece scientifically as well as artistically, was responsible for the reawakening of the medical mind, which had been dormant for 14 centuries.

Find a bone (more than a dozen will be hidden) and win a free copy of The Good Thief. Find the skull (there is only one) and win a pair of tickets to “A Novel Evening with Hannah Tinti” on Friday, March 25 (5:30-7pm) at Writers & Books. All bones must be turned in at Writers & Books by 10pm on Friday, March 4 in order to receive your prize.
