1. Creative Approaches to The Madonnas of Leningrad: A Training for Teachers and Book Discussion Leaders. Join Wendy Low, former Youth Education and Outreach Coordinator at Writers & Books, and Karen vanMeenen, “If All of Rochester Read the Same Book...” Coordinator and RIT Lecturer, for a presentation and discussion of various approaches to teaching and discussing The Madonnas of Leningrad. The discussion will revolve around analyzing the writer’s craft; character development, choices and change; social and cultural issues raised within the text; the use of creative writing and personal writing assignments in the classroom; and other pertinent information. This workshop is geared toward anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the book, especially book discussion leaders and teachers looking for insight and creative approaches to the learning process. 2. The Mirror (1975, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, 107 min., Russian with English subtitles). This 1975 masterpiece from the late Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky combines personal reminiscences, newsreel footage and Tarkovsky’s own father’s haunting poetry into an intoxicating, dream-like mediation on memory and the fast-receding past. Russian Ark (2002, directed by Aleksandr Sokurov, 99 min., Russian with English subtitles). A 19th-century French aristocrat, notorious for his scathing memoirs about life in Russia, travels through the Russian State Hermitage Museum and encounters historical figures from the last 200+ years. This unique feature film is comprised of one single shot/take. The Train (1964, directed by John Frankenheimer, 133 min.). In 1944, a German colonel loads a train with French art treasures to send to Germany. The Resistance must stop it without damaging the cargo. Iris (2001, directed by Richard Eyre, 91 min.). True story of the lifelong romance between novelist Iris Murdoch and her husband John Bayley, from their student days through her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The Rape of Europa (2006, directed by Richard Berge and Bonni Cohen, 117 min.). An award-winning documentary that tells the story of Nazi Germany’s plundering of Europe’s great works of art during World War II and Allied efforts to minimize the damage. Away From Her (2006, directed by Sarah Polley, 110 min.). A man copes with the institutionalization of his wife due to Alzheimer’s disease.

3. Join us on Friday, March 2 as we kickoff this year’s “If All of Rochester Read the Same Book…” program with an Art History Scavenger Hunt as part of First Friday, with prizes! Visit participating First Friday venues and answer the questions about displayed artworks from the novel (see the W&B web site and the First Friday website on March 1 to download the questionnaire). Bring a completed scavenger hunt list to W&B by 9pm on Friday, March 2 to receive a free copy of the novel or passes for free admission to local cultural venues such as the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Museum and Science Center and the Strong Museum of Play. The film Russian Ark will also be screened (on video) at W&B at 6pm and again at 7:45pm. This event is free and open to the public. For information on W&B events visit www.wab.org.
