Presentation: “Beyond the Reel/Real: Modern Vampire Traditions and Misconceptions” by John Edgar Browning
This talk will offer a concise history of the modern vampire community and provide an overview of common misconceptions surrounding it. The modern vampire community is comprised of people who consume, or absorb, either human and/or animal blood (sanguinarian), psychic energy (psi-vamp), or both (hybrid), and do so out of a need which they claim derives from the lack of natural energy their bodies produce.
John Edgar Browning is an Arthur A. Schomburg Fellow and PhD Candidate at SUNY Buffalo and author of, among other books and published essays, Draculas, Vampires, and Other Undead Forms: Essays on Gender, Race, and Culture and Dracula in Visual Media: Film, Television, Comic Book and Electronic Game Appearances, 1921–2010.
Free and open to the public.
