TELL ME

I need to talk
to you about something.
Yes, I’m talking to you, the
stone lion in front
of the library.
People must be amazed to see us talking: I, a
city seagull, and you, one of
the guardians of that huge
house of books.

Do you have any idea
how much you’ve seen? How
much you’ve heard?
Little children sit on your back,
having you be the conductor for their imaginations.
Young adults lean against you,
trying to solve all the problems
that life hurls at them. Old people
look at you fondly, remembering
when they were those little children
whose imaginations leapt and spun.

People don’t think much of me,
to them I’m just
one of many. But
they’ll always remember you.
If you know why,
tell me. I’m curious.
For I used to be
one of those little children
who ruled the entire world
while perched on
your stone back.
