Autumn 2002 Workshops at Writers & Books Editing, Writing, and the Publishing BusinessGet that Short Story into Print
Students will arrive with three copies of their short stories and then put final touches on them. Ultimately, each member of the class will submit at least one short story to at least one publication. We will go through the whole submission process for short stories:
We will also discuss copyright, pay and other matters of writer/editor relations. Sell Your Book
Other people get published, why not you? During this highly informative session you will learn how to navigate the maze of agents, publishers and literary attorneys. You’ll learn how to spot disreputable agents and publishers and how to avoid them. You’ll learn how to handle a phone call from an editor, offering you a contract. And if you’d like feedback on your submission packet, please bring it along. Editing and Proofreading, Necessary Evils
If you ever wondered what those weird marks meant when you got a manuscript back from an editor, or if you ever wanted to know when to use it’s or its, affect or effect, or insure, assure, and ensure—this class is for you. The class will cover proofreader’s marks, basic styles that publishers use, common grammar and spelling mistakes, and copyediting for fun and profit. Legal Issues For Writers
Working as a writer can have many ramifications beyond putting words down on the page.
These and other questions will be addressed. Making Sense of the Sentence
Gertrude Stein said, “A long complicated sentence should force itself upon you, make you know yourself know it.” The sentence is the basic building block of prose and ties the story to the oral voice of the storyteller. We’re going to look at expressive considerations in writing sentences, constructing clear and graceful lines, jagged fragments. We’ll look at how sentences serve as a vehicle of discovering what you don’t know you mean, and how sentences shape and enforce meaning in dialogue, scene and exposition. This is more a finger painting class than grammar class. |
