Summer 2002 Workshops at Writers & Books

Poetry

Introduction to Poetry

  • Instructor: Karen vanMeenen [ bio ]
  • Six Thursdays, starting July 18, 6-8:30
  • $146 General Public/$117 W&B Members
  • Limit: 8

Are you a poet? Maybe you’ve never written a poem, but if you knew where to start, maybe you could. Or perhaps you’ve written poems in the past and you’d like to get back into it. Maybe you’ve written a number of poems, but you feel shy about showing them or inadequate discussing poetry’s nuances.

In this workshop, we’ll do writing exercises and read classic and contemporary poetry. You’ll look at the different inspirations for poems, and processes for getting poems written and poetic techniques, as we attempt to figure out which ones are most natural to the poet in you.

Intermediate Poetry Workshop

  • Instructor: M.J. Iuppa [ bio ]
  • Five days, starting July 22, 6-8:30 p.m.
  • $110 General Public/$89 W&B Members
  • Limit: 12

If poetry is a gift to art, then a poet’s labor is an act of giving.

This workshop will focus on landscape and natural ability. Examples of contemporary poetry will be assigned to demonstrate daily themes and contemporary poetics. Participants are encouraged to share and discuss their poems. Optional assignments will be given.

Advanced Poetry

  • Instructor: Linda Allardt [ bio ]
  • Six weeks starting Saturday, July 20, 10 a.m. -12 p.m.
  • $103 General Public/$83 W&B Members
  • Limit: 8

This is a chance to meet and work with other experienced poets in a small workshop to do some writing, and to give and receive honest, knowledgeable feedback. We will concentrate on developing ideas, imagery, and sound in free or traditional forms.

Participation requires permission of instructor as follows:

  • by July 1, please submit up to five pages of unpublished poems, at least two of which will be used in class, to Linda Allardt, c/o Writers & Books, with your registration form and payment.
  • Applicants will be subsequently notified of acceptance into the workshop by July 8.
  • Your payment will be held until notification.
