Week 4: July 21–25
Puppets!
- JY3-D1C4
- Ages: 6–8
- Instructors: Jeremy & Brenna Sniatecki
- Mornings, 9–11:45 a.m.
- Limit: 10
An initial show by the instructors will serve as an example for diving into the magic of puppets. Participants will then practice lip-synching techniques and puppet theatrics, and build their own puppet to keep. The week will close with another show by the instructors; participants will be asked to recognize elements covered in the classes. Parents are welcome at the shows.
Books For Dessert
- JY3-M1D4
- Ages: 6–8
- Instructor: Donna Marbach [ bio ]
- Afternoons, 1–3 p.m.
- Limit: 10
This workshop may be taken as a continuation of “Banquet of Books” or as its own separate class; different stories, poems and techniques will be highlighted.
It will offer young readers and writers a feast of literary activities to further a lifelong love of books and creative expression. By hearing favorite stories read aloud, participants will get a taste of different writing styles. Together, the children will savor the fun of language through playing games, creating art projects, doing skits or puppet shows, and writing their own poems and stories. They will also learn specific writing skills (“show, don’t tell”).
For our banquet’s dessert, each child will also have the opportunity to write his or her own book, complete with illustrations and a unique cover design. Reading this self-published book to friends and family will be our “cherry on top.”
Word on the Street
- JY3-N2D4
- Ages: 8–12
- Instructor: Reenah Golden [ bio ]
- Full Day, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
This is a journalism workshop where students will spend the week developing articles for print. Our news team will beat the streets in an attempt to uncover and cover new happening in the Neighborhood of the Arts and in popular culture. We will read and critique articles from popular magazines, entertainment TV shows, City and the Democrat and Chronicle brought in by the instructor and students.
At week’s end, we will publish a small newsletter for cafés in the area. A motivated few may also have the opportunity to propose their articles to various media outlets including the instructor's own Urban television show, The Life, on UPN!

Listen Up!
- JY3-D5C4
- Ages: 13–16
- Instructor: Annette Ramos [ bio ]
- Mornings, 9 a.m.–Noon
Do you ever wish people would listen to what you have to say? Have you ever thought it’d be fun to act?
Come to this workshop and learn how to create believable characters who tell the world what it is like to be on the front edge of adolescence. We’ll read monologues (dramatic speeches) by other young people before writing our own. We’ll act silly, take risks and laugh while we learn about acting, characterization and voice.
At the end of the workshop, we’ll choose actors among us to let our characters speak from the stage.
The Return of Beauregard
- JY3-M5D4
- Ages: 13–18
- Instructor: David Ruekberg [ bio ]
- Afternoons, 1–4 p.m.
Did you know the Beauregard was invented in a grass hut on a mud-covered plain in East Anglia by Franko-Belgian waffle-pressers? It’s very possible.
In this fabulous course you will be urged to stretch your Beauregard boundary: to write about things you know in brand new ways, and to write about things you never imagined in crusty old ways. Poetry, fiction writing, personal narrative—whatever your bag is, we’ll color it, stretch it, clip it, give it wings, then stuff it in a weird little book of our own at the end of the week.
