Winter 2003 Workshops at Writers & Books

For Parents

Encouraging Young Writers: A Workshop for Parents & Educators

  • W3-186
  • Instructors: Naomi Erdmann [ bio ] and Wendy Low [ bio ]
  • Thursday, January 31, 6:30–9 pm
  • $15 General Public/$12 W&B Members
  • Limit: 16

You want to encourage your young writer, whether he or she is reluctant or avid about writing. Here is useful information and discussion on:

  • motivating writers at various ages
  • internal and external obstacles children face in becoming writers
  • recognizing how encouragement differs from pushing
  • respecting the author’s ownership of their text
  • creating opportunities for end-product pride
  • recognizing stages in learning to write well
  • recognizing various purposes for writing
  • breaking down the task and setting up processes that ease a writer’s task
  • making sure your child masters “the basics” while not losing creativity
  • providing opportunities for writers to gain support and experience

Handouts and a bibliography will be supplied. Hands-on activities will give you some perspective on what children experience while learning to write. Your questions are welcomed!
