Bonjour! Learn French songs, make puppets and eat French snacks in an introduction to French language and culture from France and other French-speaking countries. Open your heart and mind to another way of being in the world—through a different language! French games, conversational role play, dance and poetry for young children. No previous knowledge of French required. Children with previous experience speaking French are also welcome. On Friday, we will present some of our French for our family and friends, and serve them French goodies!

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and Rochester hosts the home of a picture giant: George Eastman. If you love to write poetry or short stories and feel the George Eastman House might be the perfect place to explore and create from—join us! We’ll spend a week using the house, gardens, photo galleries and permanent museum collection as inspiration for our creative writing (as well as trying picture-taking methods from pinhole cameras to Photoshop). New this year: Participants will create photographic narratives with their cameras. Our pens will capture the words that help to tell the photographic story. A final presentation featuring students’ photographic and written expressions will be displayed at a last day exhibition in the Cell Gallery. Required for this workshop: a working camera (any kind, disposable welcome) and the ability to process up to 1 roll of film.

Travel Writing: Destination Summer

  • Ages: High School
  • SY5-N5A0
  • Instructor: Karen vanMeenen
  • MORNINGS: June 27–July 1, 9 am –Noon
  • $99 W&B members / $110 general public

Are you a traveler? Do you spend summers at camp, on the road with your family, at your grandparents’ cottage, or at home basking by the pool? Do you like to document your summer vacations by writing in a journal and taking photographs? Join us as we get excited about our summer forays and plan the best ways to keep a written and visual record of our adventures. We will read travel writing from around the world and learn the easiest ways of writing about experiences in the moment, keeping things organized and eventually combining them into a book of your summer life experience. In September, we will gather together again to see what we have come up with, and share the experiences of travel and writing. This course is appropriate for any travelers with an interest in writing and the tendency to observe the world around them, whether in Penfield or Peru.

Get the Picture!

  • Ages: 14–18
  • SY5-A5A1

They say “a picture is worth a thousand words.” If you love writing and need to express yourself, then consider combining photography and creative writing to deepen your expressions and increase their impact. We’ll spend a week using the George Eastman House, gardens, photo galleries and permanent museum collection as a place to collect our thoughts and experiment with both writing and taking pictures, using the oldest pinhole camera technologies and the latest digital technology to create collages, poetry postcards and other forms that combine text and image.
