Books may well be the only true magic. —Alice Hoffman
This workshop will offer beginning readers and writers a feast of literary activities in an effort to initiate a lifelong love of books and creative expression. By hearing their favorite stories read aloud, participants will get a taste of different writing styles. Together, the children will savor the fun of language through playing games, creating art projects, doing skits or puppet shows, and writing their own poems and stories. They will also learn specific writing skills. In the second week, for our banquet’s dessert, each child will work on revising and “decorating” a piece for publication. Reading this small anthology to friends and family will be our “icing on the cake.”
WWAB-AM: Our Own Radio Show

- SY5-D2B2
- Instructor: Maria Gillard

Live radio was what people listened to for entertainment before television. CREATING a radio show is a BLAST! It involves developing characters, dialogue and stories with sound effects. It’s composing jingles for advertising fun things. It’s music, poetry and journalism all in one! This is a great opportunity for you to develop a variety of skills in writing, public speaking and acting, and a fun way to use your imagination! Anyone who plays a musical instrument or loves to sing and is interested in writing, acting and comedy is encouraged to attend. On the last day, at 11 am, we will perform and tape our show before a live audience. Later, you’ll get a recording in the mail!
Growing Tales
- Ages: 8–12
- Week 1 of 2
- SY5-D2R7
- Instructor: Annette Ramos
- TWO WEEKS, AFTERNOONS: Weekdays July 5–15, 1–4 pm
- $180 W&B members / $200 general public
Harry Potter, Beauty and the Beast, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars––many popular movies and books are based on elements of ancient oral folktales. We will start off this week by hearing folktales from various cultural backgrounds, exploring their underlying themes & plots. Ms. Ramos will then enthusiastically guide you through the steps of writing a good tale worth listening to, developing new characters and using theater and movement games, arts & crafts to bring them to life. On the last Friday we will perform for family and invited guests. You will have fun, while sharpening your oral presentation skills. Come join us, make new friends and weave your original tall tale, animal fable, or a remix of an old fairy tale to tell.
Travel Journalism: Innocents Abroad
- Ages 13–16
- Week 1 of 2
- SY5-N5T1
- Instructor: Nancy Lyon
- TWO WEEKS, ALL DAY: Weekdays July 5–15, 9 am–4 pm
- $360 W&B members / $380 general public
The travel writing genre is a wonderful merging of nuts-and-bolts journalistic and creative literary techniques. In this two-week, all-day Travel Writing workshop for aspiring writers, we will take our inspiration from the best travel writings of Mark Twain and others, and produce our own quirky travel guide to the Rochester area specifically aimed at our own age group. We will learn how to research and write the various types of commercial travel articles—from creative essays and sketches, local character profiles, walking tours, and restaurant reviews, to descriptions of local attractions and entertainment. Participants will work individually and as a team to create and produce their own unique guide to Rochester (digital cameras welcome!). We’ll learn how to conduct great interviews, use local history archives, employ lively descriptions and dialogue, evoke a strong sense of place, and engage all of the five senses.
