Week 3: July 11–15
Advertising 101
- Ages: High School
- SY5-N6D3
- Instructor: Erin Morrison-Fortunato
- MORNINGS: July 11–15, 9 am–Noon
- $99 W&B members / $110 general public
Buy Advertising 101, and your wildest dreams will come true! …Or will they? During this workshop, we’ll take a close look at advertising and the media, finding the hidden messages and planted by mass marketers and media moguls. We’ll put print ads under the magnifying glass to see what they really mean, and look carefully at films to uncover the ways filmmakers bring about a reaction. Then you’ll plan an advertising campaign of your own; either a parody of an existing campaign or a sincere campaign for something you support. Learn some of the media’s most effective strategies for persuading people like you to buy this or feel that, and how you yourself can use the media for your own ends.
Writing Short Plays
- Ages: 13 & up
- SY5-D5H7
- Instructor: John Cieslinski
- AFTERNOONS: July 11–15, 1–4 pm
- $99 W&B members / $110 general public
Have you ever thought, “I could write a play (or a movie or a TV comedy)”? Put words in other people’s mouths! In this workshop you will look at the elements of playwriting, especially conflict and character development. You will use these elements to create short plays (approximately 5–20 minutes) of your own. These plays will be cast with participants in your class and read to your invited audience.
