Enter Stage Write: The Basics of Playwriting

This course is for people who love to watch, read, and write plays. The instructor will discuss what makes a good story, how to create intriguing characters and lasting images, and how to make use of technical elements such as stage space, sound, and lights. This workshop is meant to inspire, encourage, and inform both beginning and more experienced playwrights eager to learn and improve. The instructor will concentrate on writing, class discussion, and feedback.

Screenwriting for the New Millennium

Why screenwriting? Why not? Is it for the masses? Think You Tube! Let's bring screenwriting down to earth. Whether you've written a screenplay, attempted one or have an idea, an understanding of process and a respect for craft can open you up to the possibilities of cinematic storytelling, short tale or feature length. Let's discuss how to create a piece that says what you want it to say and will entertain at the same time.

Alternative Playwrights and Performance Workshop

2nd and 4th Monday of each month, 7–9 p.m.
Continuing through May 12
Per session: $5 W&B members / $7 general public
Instructors: Ned Bobkoff and George Campbell McDade

The workshop will encourage alternative creative paths utilizing the unlimited imaginative space and time of the stage, integrating resources such as music, mime, choreography and mixed media. It is our hope that we can act as a contact point for artists who are capable of collaborating together in the creation of contemporary and fresh works.

Stand-up Comedy Workshop

5 Tuesdays, 7-9 p.m.
May 6 through June 3
$80 W&B members / $85 general public
Instructor: Carol Roberts

Stand-up comedy is the art of writing jokes blended with the art of performing them.  In this six-week supportive experiential workshop the students will learn the basics of comedy writing and performing.  Students will develop original material outside of class and perform each week for one another in a supportive atmosphere.  Some in-class writing and exercises will take place.  Material covered will include:  types of humor, style, attitude, segues, A&B material, ad lib, microphone usage, juxtaposition, joke writing and progressive comedy.  The class will culminate with a show the final day of class.  No experience necessary, beginners and pros are welcome.  Warning:  class can get pretty jovial.  "Depends" are available onsite at nominal cost.  Instructor is a former standup comic who has performed with Ellen Degeneris, Robin Williams, and Paula Poundstone.
