Beginning Poetry

In this one-week course, each day we will take a look at a poem or two from a different published author, discuss her/his poem[s], use a writing prompt to start one of our own, and “open the mic” for the class members who have one to share. All of these activi- ties will be done in a supportive environment. In addition, the class will hold a reading Thursday, Aug 7, 7 p.m., in the Writers & Books performance space.

Self Portraits and Landscapes

Renew your imagery, adopt personae, andfind new subject matter for your own poems. This workshop focuses on responding to paintings and photographs. Beginning with honing skills of observation for imagery and thenmaking the poems that shift from viewer to characters. We will explore the various “vantage points” of a poemby doing exercises that Summer from particular pieces of art. Some exercises would be shared so all the participants would respond to that same visual prompt but then others would be self- selected. Bring two examples of favorite photos and/or paintings.

Delving into Poetry

Have you always enjoyed reading poetry but have been afraid to write it? Do you want to get back to poetry after a long absence? Are you are writer in another genre and want to try your hand at poetry? This one-day workshop will explore what makes poetry different from other genres. In-class writing exercises, as well as readings of published poetry, will get creativity flowing. You will be given resources to further your exploration beyond the workshop.

East Meets West: Understanding and Composing English Language Haiku

This course will briefly explore the genesis of haiku in old Japan, its journey to the west and how the form has been adapted to English language, our culture and sensibilities. Participants will
be exposed to the work of poets whose writing exemplifies the best in English language haiku. Model poems will provide understanding and inspiration as we compose our own. In a workshop setting our efforts will be critiqued and crafted with an eye on publication. Materials, with the exception of a personal journal or notebook will be provided by the instructor.
