Stage & Screen

Screenwriting for the New Millennium

WA8-D01
2 Saturdays, 10 a.m.–noon
Jan. 26 through Feb. 2
$45 W&B members / $52 general public
Instructor: Mickey Metz

Why screenwriting? Why not? Is it for the masses? Think You Tube! Let's bring screenwriting down to earth. Whether you've written a screenplay, attempted one or have an idea, an understanding of process and a respect for craft can open you up to the possibilities of cinematic storytelling, short tale or feature length. Let's discuss how to create a piece that says what you want it to say and will entertain at the same time.

Alternative Playwrights and Performance Workshop

WA8-D02
2nd and 4th Monday of each month, 7–9 p.m.
Jan. 28 through May 12
Per session: $5 W&B members / $7 general public
Instructors: Ned Bobkoff and George Campbell McDade

The workshop will use the written word as a jumping off place to encourage alternative creative paths utilizing the unlimited imaginative space and time of the stage, integrating resources such as music, mime, choreography and mixed media. The objective would be to inspire, nurture, challenge, amaze, and educate both artists and audiences in order to make our community more vibrant and alive to the important changes in the world today – including the changing language of theatrical work.  It is our hope that we can act as a contact point for artists who are capable of collaborating together in the creation of contemporary and fresh works.

Acting 102 for Playwrights

WA8-D03
8 Tuesdays, 7–9 p.m.
Feb. 5 through Mar. 25 (Plus a bonus night, April 1, when we will stage student plays)
$159 W&B members / $165 general public
Instructor: Michael H. Arve

Many playwrights are as mystified by the art of acting as actors are by the art of  play writing. In 8 weekly sessions we will explore the basics of acting, the process of developing a character on stage and how to be true to the character as written on the page. We will also discuss the challenges actors and directors have in performing and mounting a play. This class is, in part, a continuation of Acting 101 for Playwrights, offered in the last catalog, but new students are also welcome join this one. The class will culminate in a public performance of original plays by writers in the class.
