JA9-N01
4 Mondays 7-9 p.m.
July 27 through August 17
$87 W&B members / $93 general public
Instructor: Anais Salibian

If you're interested in writing about your life but don't know where to start, this is the class for you. We'll discuss different forms of memoir and do writing exercises that will help you find the stories inside the flow of events in your life. Writing does more than put down what you already know; it helps you discover new meanings. We'll learn the basics of how to “show, not tell” so that your writing can come alive. You'll learn how to use dialog, description, action, inner thoughts and summary the way a fiction writer would to write compelling stories.

Writing to Charm and Fascinate: A Memoir Seminar

JA9-N02
1 Thursday 7-9 p.m.
July 16
$39 W&B members / $43 general public
Instructor: Richard M. Rosenbaum

To write an interesting memoir, the writer needs to draw generously on lifetime experiences, says Richard M. Rosenbaum, author of the political memoir No Room for Democracy. Examine your scrapbooks, records, old letters, and your memories. You need a good memory. Some humor is desirable. Henry Kissinger, in the book’s Foreword, calls it "a plum pudding of fascinating stories."  You need fascinating.  The New York Times calls it a "charming memoir."  You need charming.  C-span featured it because they found it classy and exciting.  You need classy and exciting. And you need to work hard. In this class Richard Rosenbaum will focus on the memoirist’s tasks, techniques, and ultimate satisfactions.
