Winter 2009 Workshops at Writers & Books JournalismMagazine Writing
Writing creative non-fiction articles—the kind that fill newsstand magazines—can be lucrative if you know how to break into the market. This workshop, taught by the editor of ByLine Magazine, will cover such topics as targeting audience, tracking down ideas, crafting great hooks, and filling your articles with style and substance. Whether your passion is fly-fishing, computers, or collection mushrooms, the instructor will show you how to take those first steps toward publication.
Interviewing Basics
This class is designed for those with no formal education or experience in journalism. You will learn essential questions to ask, why and how to ask them, and how to listen and respond to those you interview—in essence, how to formulate questions to carry out an interview so you can write effective profiles and quotation-based articles. These skills will not only improve your chances of doing a better interview; they will also make you a more effective communicator.
