Now a staple of every conceivable form of media, the interview has become an ever-present part of modern life. But interviewing isn’t nearly as easy as it looks – it’s an artform that requires technique. With some practice, however, the interview can prove immensely rewarding, useful, and even fun. In this workshop, participants will learn how to come up with great questions, develop a comfortable rapport, and deal with some common stumbling blocks like tight-lipped subjects and unexpected detours. Fun-filled exercises include preparing questions for any real or fictitious figure from history and play-by-play analysis of some classic interviews. Whether you’re just starting out or already experienced in the interview process, this workshop is designed to help you get engaging, snappy, informative Q&As and soundbyte-quality quotes. 
With the runaway popularity of blogs, we are not only awash in news, but it seems like everyone has joined in on the discussion. While this is a great thing, it is also very difficult to fact from interpretation, particularly on the internet. This workshop instructs students on how to be true to the facts while remaining faithful to their own political and tonal point of view, as well as how to communicate opinions without compromising journalistic integrity. Students will engage in reading and writing exercises such as monitoring for bias in popular news reports and also discuss/debate the nature of bias and objectivity in news reporting. This workshop is aimed at writers interested in writing or working in any form of media in a capacity that incorporates or relates to news reporting – i.e: bloggers, independent journalists and aspiring journalists of all types (including those seeking positions with corporate-owned outlets).
