Creative Writing

Breaking through that Writer’s Block

S10-C01
4 Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
May 26 through June 23 (skips June 9)
$87 W&B members / $93 general public
Instructor: Donna Marbach

This is a work shop designed to help focus the distracted writer and jump-start the daydreaming one. In this workshop, we will first examine, then obliterate the many excuses we can all find that prevent us from writing. Together, we will work on behavioral strategies and personal goals in order to find the time and motivation to write. We will practice writing in and out of class by using prompts, pictures, games, and other devices to stimulate our creative juices. Our goal is to turn that Writer’s Block into a brick—the first brick for a foundation of life-long writing.

Brain Works: The Creative Person’s Tool Box

S10-C02
1 Saturday, 10-3 (1/2 hr. for lunch)
May 8
$45 W&B members / $49 general public
Instructor: Len Messineo

“Look, we can’t fall into the old patterns. We have to think of a plan.”--Lisa Simpson
Do you sometimes find yourself at wit’s end, digging yourself deeper into the same mental hole, locking yourself in a box as tight as a Wells Fargo safe? Brain Works will offer participants a toolbox of creative thinking techniques gleaned from sources as diverse as Aristotle, all the way up to contemporary dean of lateral thinking, Edward deBono. Borrowing from the most recent discoveries in neuroscience and using the left-right brain metaphor, Brain Works will look at the creative thinking process and such brainstorming techniques as free-writing/looping, clustering, decisional PMI, horizon thinking, concept fans, lotus blossom, rules of ten, doddling, recurrent why, stratals, filaments, fate maps, provocations, topical questions, end-user questions, etc. In addition to giving participants practice with these techniques with problems relevant to their work, we will discuss software supportive of creativity and idea generation. This class, though targeted specifically for writers, will also be of value to planners, teachers, administrators, or for anyone whose business it is to think outside the box.

S10-C10

What’s your Rochester story? As part of the ArtWalk 2 project, currently in the final planning process, stories about Rochester will be integrated into the North Goodman sidewalk between University Avenue and College Avenue. The stories to be used in the project will be selected by a jury through an open submission process. Here’s your chance to develop and hone the story you would like to tell so that it captures the attention of those who hear it.

In this workshop we’ll do writing exercises that will bring out your story, and help you polish the story you want to tell in an engaging and succinct manner. Writing does more than put down what you already know; it helps you discover new meanings in that story. You’ll learn the basics of how to “show, not tell” so that you story will come alive. You’ll learn how to use dialogue, description, action, inner thoughts and summary the way a fiction writer would, to tell your Rochester story in a way that others will want to hear, and will remember.
