Like the short story, the short play can be powerful, funny and moving. For six weeks we will focus in on this popular short form and pack it with all the conflict and characters found in longer one-acts and full-length play. Students will be given exercises in dialogue, dramatic structure, character building, and setting. Students will also be given a list of contests and festivals that solicit the 10-minute form.

Stand-Up Comedy Workshop

Stand-up comedy is the art of writing jokes blended with the art of performing them. In this 6-week supportive experiential workshop, students will learn the basics of comedy writing and performing. Students will develop original material outside of class and perform each week for one another in a supportive atmosphere. Some in-class writing exercises will take place. Material covered will include: types of humor, style, attitude, segues, A & B material, ad lib, microphone usage, juxtaposition joke writing, progressive comedy. The class will culminate with a show on the final day of class. No experience necessary, beginners and pros welcome. Warning: class can get jovial. Instructor is a former stand-up comic who has performed with Ellen DeGeneres, Robin Williams and Paula Poundstone.

Comedy Improv Workshop

Come play comedy improv games as seen on the TV show Whose Line is it Anyway? No experience necessary. Comedy improv is the art of creating scenes and playing theater games based on audience suggestions then and there. It is a great skill for actors, standup and writers. Learn how to unleash your imagination and open your mind to positive, creative twists and turns. Come prepared to laugh.

Screenwriting 101

Instructor: Evan Rubenstein

This class will teach you how to craft your ideas into an engaging, professional screenplay. You will learn how to develop three-dimensional characters through dialogue, inner-outer conflicts, and character arcs. You will learn plotting through inciting incidents, three-act structures, and mythic sequencing. We will study popular films to deconstruct their plot and characters. Additionally, we review formatting and style so your script will be submission ready.
