Sounding Sense in French Poetry
W10-L01
6 Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m.
Jan. 27 through Mar. 3
$115 W&B members / $125 general public
Instructor: Kitty Jospe
This course offers a representative sample of French poems, (primarily late 19th and 20th century) sounded out in the original, with analysis of their translation by British and American poets into English. This course is for anyone interested in exploring the underpinnings of voiced language and wishing to know more about the aesthetics and linguistic choices of French poetry. We will examine rhythms and breath timing, as well as the fun of sound in both languages, tongued through the teeth, rolled in the throat, pocketed and pursed on the lips. This will be a unique opportunity to sensitize the ear to the sounds of French, and examine French poems in a rich context. No previous knowledge of poetry or French is necessary, however, students will gain maximum benefit from previous background knowledge in these areas.
