Obama’s Faves

W10-R02
6 Thursdays 7-9 p.m.
Feb. 11 through March 18
$115 W&B members / $120 general public
Instructor: Robert D. Baker

An avid reader, President Obama has publicly talked about the particular books that helped him forge an identity, grapple with the complexities of human existence, and make a difference in the world.  In this seminar, we  will read two novels he often mentions: Toni Morrison’s Song of  Solomon and Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory, as well as a  play: Shakespeare’s Hamlet. We will also examine excerpts and shorter  works by writers such as James Baldwin, Elizabeth Alexander, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Our reading and discussion will  have two main goals: first, we will gain a more in-depth appreciation and understanding of Obama’s character and values; secondly, we will follow President Obama’s lead in enjoying some great literature.
