Fiction: Rewriting

J11-F01
5 Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
July 12 through Aug. 9
$97 W&B members / 101 general public
Instructor: Nina Alvarez

Sooner or later all fiction writers need to embrace the maxim that “All good writing is rewriting.” So here, finally, is a workshop on exactly that. In this class we will learn the top five problems that an editor will fix in a manuscript, what writers should be trying to accomplish in successive drafts. We’ll dive into our own manuscripts and rewrite, cut, and polish.

First Drafts: Finishing the Ideas

J11-F02
3 Wednesdays 6:30-8:30 pm
July 6 through 20
$87 W&B members / $93 general public
Instructor: Melissa Slocum

Often, the most difficult part of writing is starting and then finishing the first draft. In this class, students work on how to generate new and unique story ideas while getting a whole draft down. We will discuss what story elements like character and plot to focus on when drafting, and what elements to work on in revision. And students will ultimately learn what instincts of theirs to follow in that draft. Each student leaves the class with at least one first draft and multiple ideas to begin more stories.
