Wine and Words:  “Wine-ing Poetic”

S11- T02
1 Saturday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
June 25
$39 W&B members/$43 general public
Instructor: Holly Howell

“Clear pale gold, with delicately earthy scents of truffles and mushrooms surrounding ripe honeyed apples.  Tart, almost tangy tree fruit flavors with a soft sweetness shyly peeking out from behind a curtain of steely acidity.”

Say what?  I thought it just tasted like white wine.  Many of us like to sip on a nice glass of wine from time to time.  But, you may wonder how that simple and enjoyable beverage became so complicated to describe.  Well, we are going to completely de-mystify that in a matter of hours.  Learn how to taste wine, how to appreciate its flavors, and how to best describe it in your OWN words.  Students need only bring their taste buds and their creativity.  Participants must be 21 years of age or older.

Wine and Words:  “A Tour de France”

J11-G01
1 Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
August 6
$39 W&B members/$43 general public
Instructor: Holly Howell

What is the difference between a Bordeaux and a Burgundy?  How do you correctly pronounce Chateauneuf-du-Pape?  And what is that crazy thing they call “terroir”?  The country of France is a virtual planet of wine in itself.  Each region has its own traditions and styles of wine.  This class is designed for the beginning wine drinker to understand the languate of France, and the labeling laws for French wine bottles.  Beyond that, you will also get a feel for the meaning of wine at the French table, and the philosophy by which they approach this divine fruit of the earth. (Recommended reading before class- Adventures on the Wine Route, Kermit Lynch, North Point Press) Participants must be 21 years of age or older.

Wine and Words: “A New York State of Wine”

J11-G02
1 Saturday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
August 27
$39 W&B members/$43 general public
Instructor: Holly Howell

Once upon a time, we were known as “The land of Pink Catawba and Lake Niagara”.  Boy have things changed since then!  The Finger Lakes region of New York State is taking the world by storm.  As a matter of fact, the year 2010 was a huge turning point for us on the world stage.  Just in case you’ve missed out on the good news, this class is being offered to catch you up on the incredible things that are happening in our own backyard.  From our crisp, refreshing Rieslings to our luscious sweet ice wines, the Finger Lakes has finally received its long overdue recognition.  (Recommended reading to be announced - three new wine books coming out this summer by local wine writers.  I’d love to talk about them all at this class.) Participants must be 21 years of age or older.

Wine and Words:  “Reading Between the Wines”

J11-G03
1 Saturday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
September 24
$39 W&B members/$43 general public
Instructor: Holly Howell

“Wine is like a shy dog.  Lunge for it and it backs away.  Just sit still and it draws nearer.  Wine is less about what you can grasp than about how you can receive it.  You grasp it more firmly if you grab it less tightly.”
Acclaimed wine importer, Terry Theise, has a unique way with words when it comes to understanding wine.  His newest book, Reading Between the Wines is a must-read for wine novices and afficionados alike.  It gives the stuff in your glass a whole new meaning, and can inspire an entirely new appreciation of the wine experience. (Recommended reading Reading Between the Wines, Terry Theise, University of California Press) Participants must be 21 years of age or older.
