Great Beginnings . . . or False Starts?

W12-C01
1 Saturday, 10 a.m.-Noon
Feb. 11
$39 W&B members / $43 general public
Instructor: Judith Lemoncelli

Think you’ve written a best seller? Maybe so, but will an agent or editor get beyond the first page of your manuscript? How about the first sentence? This course examines common mistakes writers make at the very beginning of their story, and points out errors to be avoided to stay out of the rejection pile. (Students are encouraged to bring the opening page of their manuscript to share with the class.)

W12-C02
8 Tuesdays 7-8:30 p.m.
Jan. 24 through Mar. 13
$175 W&B members / $180 general public
Instructor: Gregory Gerard

So you’ve always wanted to write but never made the time. Or you’re not sure how to start. Or you’ve got lots of things started, but nothing’s good enough to share. This is the course for YOU. We’ll use introductory, in-class writing assignments to explore the genres of fiction and non-fiction. Each week will focus on a particular author and style -- including popular favorites like Burroughs, Sedaris, Munro, and King. Every student will get the opportunity to share their work for peer feedback -- but only when you’re ready! Snacks at every session.

Life Journeys: Tourists, Pilgrims, Questers and Dawdlers Welcome!

W12-C04
8 Tuesdays, 11a.m.-1 p.m.
Jan. 24 through Mar. 13
$175 W&B members / $180 general public
Instructor: Anais Salibian

How far have your traveled in your life? Where did you begin? How did you end up here? Did you choose your journeys or did they happen to you? Is there a particular place that speaks to you soul? This memoir class will lead you on a journey to see your life with new eyes. You’ll explore leaving, returning, or staying put, and give expression to how these peregrinations have shaped you. Whether the journey was the first few steps you took alone, hitch-hiking around the world, or moving out of a bad marriage, something happens when you leave. Maybe you come back; maybe you don’t. In either case, you’re not the same.
Some of us don’t go far physically, but our travels are explorations of the inner landscape. The story questions are the same. Have you been a mere tourist or were you on a quest? Were you ever lost? Did you find yourself when you ended up in a strange land? In addition to these thematic explorations, the class will offer instruction on how to shape stories, write vivid scenes, and engage the heart and mind of your reader. Trust me, this will be light years ahead of “what I did on my summer vacation.”

Unfolding Pleasure: The Sentence Experience

W12-C05
4 Fridays 11 a.m- 1 p.m.
Feb. 3 through Feb. 24
$87 W&B members / $93 general public
Instructor: Anais Salibian

“Why should a sequence of words be anything but a pleasure?” Gertrude Stein asks. A pleasure to read and a pleasure to write.
Okay, writing is hard work. Our first few drafts are usually a struggle just to get thoughts and images down on paper. But once they’re there, the fun begins. Now we have something to breathe life into. How do we know what we should do to our grammatically correct sentences so they engage the reader’s mind and heart? A sentence is an unfolding experience for the reader, each word producing an effect. This class will teach you to look at your sentences from your readers’ points of view. You are their guide; if you don’t want to get them lost or bored, you have to be aware of making the right choices in diction, syntax and sentence structure. Learn what those choices are and how to apply them for your intended purpose. If you like puzzles, if you like music, if you like wrapping presents, if you like constructing things, you’ll like composing the satisfying sentence.

Writing Your Memoirs: The Surprise Story of Your Life

W12-C07
8 Mondays, 7-9 p.m.
Jan. 23 through Mar. 12
$175 W&B members / $180 general public
Instructor: Anais Salibian

If you’re interested in writing about your life but don’t know where to start, this is the class for you. We’ll discuss different forms of memoir and do writing exercises that will help you find the stories inside the flow of events in your life. Writing does more than put down what you already know; it helps you discover new meanings. We’ll learn the basics of how to “show, not tell” so that your writing can come alive. You’ll learn how to use dialog, description, action, inner thoughts and summary the way a fiction writer would to write compelling stories.

More Time to Write

W12-C20
8 Wednesdays, 12 noon-1:30 p.m.
Jan. 11 through Mar. 7 (Class will meet without teacher 2/22)
$175 W&B members / $180 general public
Instructor: Wendy Low

You know you want to be writing on a regular basis--for your sanity, for your soul, to record your life, observations and ideas, to understand your own mind, to get a desired project underway or completed, or to fulfill your dream or destiny as a writer--but something is getting in the way. Maybe you have never gotten started. Maybe you need to break through a writer’s block. Every Wednesday we will gather and write, explore techniques for carving out time and silencing inner critics, and share our struggles and successes. We will read insights from artists and writers into the creative process. We will look at what motivates us, what we let get in our way, and what it takes to get a habit established. By giving each other acknowledgement and a push for each new week, we’ll work on making writing a habit for life. A half hour of each session will be set aside to write. (And you can stay after class and keep writing.)
