Independent Voices: Pursuing Alternative Journalism with Head, Heart, and Soul
W12-J01
6 Wednesdays 7-9 p.m.
Jan. 25 through Feb. 29
$115 W&B members / $120 general public
Instructor: Jack Bradigan Spula
From Swift to Paine, and from Twain to Amy Goodman, independent, incisive, fearless, and radical media have always walked the talk along with activists in social, political, and economic movements. Writer-activists now have wonderful high-tech innovations at their command -- and no course will fail to introduce students to these -- but the basics are ageless: Real alternative journalism requires an understanding of competing histories and ideologies, faithfulness to the facts, willingness to explore root causes, empathy with the underdog, a hatred of oppression… and a thick skin. In this six-week course, veteran journalist-activist Jack Bradigan Spula will show students the ropes -- and who pulls the strings, and why they do so, in media today. The course will help students root out appropriate stories, produce good copy and solid analysis, and find outlets for their work.
